2025 High School Track and Field National Records Update: Tate Taylor Is Unbelievable

This year, the world of high school track and field was flipped on its head. And it’s all thanks to one kid who didn’t just break a record—he shattered it, along with a seemingly impenetrable barrier.
Tate Taylor: A Sub-10 Second Sensation?
In what can only be described as the most historic high school sprint performance of all time, Tate Taylor, a high school junior, ran a mind-blowing, wind-legal sub-ten-second 100 meters. This wasn’t just a new record; it was a cosmic event in the sport. Taylor didn’t just dip under the ten-second mark; he annihilated it, clocking an unbelievable 9.92 seconds this past May at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 6A Championships in Austin, Texas.
To put this in perspective, Taylor’s time makes him the first person ever to break the ten-second barrier in high school officially, as maintained by the National Federation of High Schools Association (NFHS). He absolutely obliterated the previous record of 10.13 seconds, set by the phenomenal Matthew Boling in 2019. It’s also worth noting that just before Taylor’s record-breaking run, Brayden Williams (Duncanville High School, Duncanville, TX) had already turned heads with a blistering 10.01 seconds, a time that—on any other day—would have been the new national record. But Taylor’s performance made it a footnote in history.
This kid has everything: the speed, the form, and a maturity on the track that’s well beyond his years. While nobody can predict the future, it’s not a stretch to say that Tate Taylor has all the tools to become something truly special in the sport of track and field. He’s a name you’ll want to remember. Or a legendary household name you can’t escape.
Other New NFHS National Record Holders for 2025
While all eyes were on Tate, other incredible athletes were busy rewriting the record books as well.
Boys High Jump: Jeremiah Lysius Jumps to New Heights
Another junior, Jeremiah Lysius from Somerset Canyons High School in Boynton Beach, Florida, soared over the competition at the Florida Class 2A State Championships. He set a new high school boys’ record with a stunning leap of 7-6 1/2. This jump wasn’t just a win; it was a statement. Lysius’s performance puts him in an elite class of athletes who can clear a height that’s taller than most doors.
Girls Set Records, Too!
While the boys were making history on the track, the girls weren’t far behind. The 2025 season saw two incredible new records set that have cemented their place in the history books.
Jane Hedengren Rewrites the Distance Record Book
Get ready to hear the name Jane Hedengren for a long, long time. The distance phenom from Timpview High School in Provo, Utah, didn’t just break the 3200-meter record; she absolutely obliterated it. The previous record of 9:47.88 was considered untouchable—until Hedengren came along and clocked an astonishing 9:30.68. That’s a jaw-dropping 17-second drop, and it shows the kind of talent this young athlete possesses. Now that she’s heading to Brigham Young University this fall, you can bet she’ll be a force to be reckoned with on the collegiate stage.
Lancaster High School: The Fastest Girls 4x100m Relay Team of All Time
Speed is a team sport, and nobody knows that better than the girls from Lancaster High School in Texas. The relay team of Lily Pierrot, Saniyah Miller, Taylor Marie Wilson, and Datavia Hunter turned in a performance for the ages. At the UIL 6A Championships, they were a blur, crossing the finish line in a blistering 43.91 seconds. They are now the first high school girls’ 4×100-meter relay team ever to run a sub-44-second time, solidifying their place as the fastest high school relay team in history.
Below is the current list of High School Track and Field National Record Holders as maintained by the NFHS as of September 11, 2025.
